Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been reading and writing since I was about 10. I have an issue reading bad grammar and plot holes in stories, so I hope to help people fix that!
Here is the process by which I'll beta your story:
1.) You send me a message with a little bit about your story - quick summary, how long it is, finished or not, basic stuff. I'll reply about whether I think I can beta it or not. If yes, then:
2.) Send me a Microsoft Word document as an attachment in an e-mail.
3.) While I'm reading the story, I'll use Word's comment feature to interject spelling and grammar issues, as well as things I like or don't like about the plot.
4.) At the end I'll comment on overall things that are good or bad about the story - characters, plot, etc. If there's anything specific you want me to comment on, I'll do that as well.
P.S. You need to take the initiative and at least run spelling and grammar check on your story. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I know how to fix spelling errors, and I will point them out. I will also notice missing or extra commas, apostrophes, and punctuation. I'm better at the grammar and spelling than the plot, but I know what I like when I read a story, and I will notice plot holes. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm a little bad at descriptions myself, but I can tell where one is too much or not enough. I tend to read like a reader and tell you what I, as a reader, don't like or do like. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I read:
* Romance
* Young Adult (nothing TOO angsty, like suicide)
* Urban Fantasy (not like Lord of the Rings or whatever, but where people live in a place like New York or LA and have magic powers or meet a unicorn or whatever).
I WILL read slash and femmeslash. I WILL read anything with GLBT characters or anything "off the mainstream" (excluding vampire stories, because rarely are they well written). |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not beta poetry. I also won't do science fiction, simply because I don't know a lot about science and space and would not be able to accurately beta a story in that genre.
If you don't like your story, I probably won't either. If you didn't spend a lot of time on it, then why should I? And if you can't even both with spell check... *sigh* |
