Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I will read anything you send me with a critical eye, looking not only for spelling and grammar mistakes, but also character and plot flaws and inconsistencies. I will suggest alternative approaches anywhere I see them, not because I think they are better, but only because it will provide you with more options to consider. Do not send me something if you don't want actual critiques. I will say everything constructively and never in a mean-spirit, but I will not simply praise your work. Send me something if you want an independent, outside opinion of your writing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strength is that I am a keen observer of people, which translates into critiquing characters. I also have a good eye for grammar and spelling. I also like to take a close look at the 'worlds' that people build in their writing |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
In my own writing, I have trouble with pacing and plot structure. Mostly, I focus on characterization, and my writing tends to put plot second. In my personal philosophy, this is the way fiction should be, and I acknowledge that this could be a problem if you don't share the same philosophy. However, I will never try to push this on you if you put plot first. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer science fiction, particularly hard science fiction (a focus on the science). Sci-fi/fantasy enthuses me far less, i.e. the Star Wars type. I don't mind fantasy, but please no anime/manga/hentai or whatever stories. Stories that promise realistic and not over-the-top characterization will receive the most attention from me. Also, fiction about contemporary life is of great interest to me, particularly fiction that deals with current events. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Anime/manga/hentai---do not send me these. And please, please, please, if you're strictly adhering to a genre, try to be original, and by original I don't mean calling them goblins instead of orcs, and faeries instead of elves. I will reject unoriginal work. And please get me attention within the first 5 pages, otherwise you have an ineffective story. |
