Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My name is Madeline and I have written two stories that are longer than 400 pages, with more on the way. I feel I've grown a lot as a writer, I know what I did wrong in the past, and I've got two solid years of English AP under my belt now, as well as a course in creative fiction writing. In short: I have good grammar skills and an eye for continuity and verisimilitude. For those of you who don't know the meaning of this word: Verisimilitude is "believability in context." Sure, you might be writing about a world full of half-tiger half-darning-needle hybrids, but as long as you can justify everything "in context" your work will have a certain level of believability. I'm here to help you keep everything in line. I'm nice and easy to work with, but I'll tell you what I see when I see it. You need a beta reader because you want to make your work better, not because you want me to agree with every last bit of your manuscript.
So...let's get started, then! :D |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
1. Completed English 1 Honors, English 2 Honors, English 3 AP and English 4 AP in high school. Received a score of 4 on both APs.
2. In the midst of a creative writing course with a focus in fiction.
3. Creating dynamic characters with believable personalities
4. Able to imagine long-term stories (300++ pages)
5. An affluent reader of many different authors in the fantasy, science-fiction and horror genres (though I really only do Stephen King in horror ^^;)
6. An almost obsessive love for destroying cliches
7. An understanding personality and a readiness to listen
8. I always ask questions |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
1. Not much knowledge of genres that are not fantasy, sci-fi or horror (I'm not emo, just particular, haha)
2. An utter loathing of Christopher Paolini and everything he does (this is only a weakness if you personally like him)
3. I procrastinate sometimes. If I'm being slow, please send me a note and tell me to get my act in gear. I respond well to kicks in the ass.
4. I curse |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love reading fantasy stories. Fantasy is my forte, above everything else. I am a fair-weather science-fiction enthusiast, and you may want to find someone else for your hard-core sci-fi tour-de-force, because I probably won't understand the science aspects. Haha, sorry. However, if you're blending the two, I'm game and eager! Also, if you're a casual sci-fi-er, shoot 'em my way!
Also, if you have written a Mary Sue...and you know in your heart it's a Sue...and you'd like to save the poor thing before something terrible happens to her violet eyes, PLEASE SEND HER/HIM. I'll be gentle, I promise, but nobody's gotten anywhere with a SUPERBLY-PERFECT-AWESOME character. The more you know. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I would like to say send me everything, but I probably don't read nearly enough normal, non-fantastical fiction to be adequate for your "slice of life" everyman story. The only true-to-life stories I ever read anymore are the ones assigned for school. |
