I have never been an official beta-reader for an author, but I know how to edit. First, I read for content/pleasure only to get an idea about what is going on in the passage. Then I go back and pick out sentence structure, obvious grammar errors, typos, and other major content issues. If this doesn't seem to fix all problems, then I'll read it a third time and tweak anything else that doesn't sit will with me. Ii like to mke blunt comments and say what I think works and doesn't work.

Fiction is my ideal type of story. How do you beta poetry anyway?

I would not suggest that I beta a play for format or anything of that nature. I know nothing of the format of plays or scripts.
