Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've never betaread an original story before, although I've done extensive betareading for fanfiction in the Harry Potter and House MD fandoms. As a beta, I tend to ask authors to email me their works as a Microsoft Word document, at which time I will load the stories into Word, turn on "track changes," and make edits and suggestions before emailing them back to the author. My turnaround time is four days to a week depending on my workload. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm fairly good at picking out grammar mistakes. I'm good at helping with the overall flow of a story, as well as with development of characters and keeping them "in character" (for example, if your character is a pirate and he's talking like the Earl of Buckinghamvilleshire, I'll call you on it). |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I might be a tiny bit nitpicky. I've been criticized for correcting things because they "sounded awkward," although they were not technically wrong, which annoys some authors. I've also been told my comments can be somewhat subjective. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Romance; I tend to write mostly teacher/student romance stories, but I'll read basically any sort of romance. I like fantasy as long as it's not too complex (see below). Blood and gore's not really my thing, although I don't mind abuse/self-mutilation (I know that sounds odd, but I'm mentioning it because I know there are a lot of people who have a problem with it). I'll try anything once. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Really in-depth sci-fi or fantasy where there's a lot of background stuff about the setting, species of the characters, etc., that I have to remember. Blood and gore. Etc. |
