Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been writing my whole life and while I am not a stingy person, I do have an eye for grammar and spelling and will point out mistakes if you have them. If you choose me to beta read your story or poem, I will also be looking for strong word choice and structure. I love symbols and metaphors. I'm not looking for a particular genre or quality of writing; whether you're in middle school or you're an adult, I will strive to give you the same constructive criticism. However, I am a slow reader at times, so please do not expect me to slog through your 1000-page romance novel in one fell swoop. I'll leave reviews chapter-by-chapter, and try to respond to requests in a timely manner. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Simply putting together paragraphs that make sense; that's probably one of my greater strengths. I don't tend to make spelling or grammatical errors. I also put myself wholeheartedly into descriptions and imagery. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I do not keep good schedules and therefore my writing/reading habits are halting and spastic. I once went for three years before finishing a story I had started in high school. But if I am asked to do something specifically I will usually stick to it and get it done. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like fantasy "period pieces" (medieval, futuristic, historical or made-up places and people, with minimal fairies/dragons/etc.), horror, some science fiction, young adult stories, metaphorical poetry (think T.S. Eliot), creative manga, well-written spiritual stories, children's books, and the occasional romance. Basically, if you like the kind of stuff I write, I'll probably like yours. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Fantasies with too many complex names or an abundance of dwarves, trolls, elves, etc. tend to bore me a little. Sexism and racism grate on my nerves. If your story is highly erotic or overtly pornographic, please do not request me (stories rated M are okay with me, as long as they don't belong in an adult bookstore). But that is pretty much the only thing I won't read. Even if I don't like your subject matter, I will try to give helpful criticism for your writing. |
