Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a third year university student studying three majors: Creative Writing, English Literature and History. I've been a beta for a number of my classmates and I've tutored a number of high school students in Creative Writing.
Some have said my style is a little impersonal. I won't hold your hand through the entire story but I will give clear constructive criticism about the overall story as well as specific sentences or phrases. I think that a writer should do the bulk of the work and I basically work as an editor/proofreader/critic. I'm not so much someone to bounce ideas off, more to critique the drafts as they progress.
In terms of poetry, I love giving as much critique as possible. This means that I'll give you line by line (if it's necessary) and my overall feelings by stanza or at the end. At the moment, I'm quite busy but happy to critique/edit/beta any poetry you have. |

I'm also very against cliches but will suggest ways to either subvert them or replace them, particularly in poetry.
I think I have a knack for knowing what "works" and what doesn't in a piece. I'm not always right and I'll concede that but after editing and critiquing poetry for a number of years, I think I'm fairly good at what I do. |

Occasionally I lose site of the overall picture when doing chapter by chapter but normally I just do another once over to make sure the plot is developing as it should be. |

I'm happy to beta most stories really though I do prefer poetry or poetic prose over fiction. |

I am not a fan of action, fantasy, sci fi or basically anything supernatural. It's never really been my thing and I find it hard to beta something I just can't get into.
I've decided recently that while I'm not a big fan of love poetry (it's normally far too trite and melodramatic) that I would love to beta some creative and interesting love poetry. If you think you've got it, send it my way. |
