Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm fairly new to beta-reading, but not to writing or editing. I have an inner grammar/spelling Nazi, so I can't help but call you out on details. Also, if a sentence or paragraph sounds awkward or weak to me, I'll try to help you figure out a better way to say it within the context of your style. For broader aspects of a story, I prefer to focus on characterization. Sometimes, I come up with plot twists (usually, I love to fill in holes in a character's past that'll affect the present of the story), but I try not to be too intrusive. It's -your- story, after all. :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Developing characters within the limits of a story; adding plot twists whenever inspired. Being a total grammar and spelling Nazi. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Description of physical spaces, occasionally of physical people; in other words, the more visual aspects of a story. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Fiction: romance, comedy, drama, fantasy, historical fiction, sci-fi. Any combination of the aforementioned :) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Poetry; horror/torture porn, extremely graphic violence; stream-of-consciousness, experimental meta-fiction; nonfiction. Also, fiction tackling extremely depressing topics bums me out and makes me feel unjustified to be trying to make corrections to it (in other words, who am I to try to say how a person should feel if they've been raped or someone close to them has died, etc.?) I'll still beta-read it if you really want me to, but I might be hesitant to share what I really think. |
