Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I do a lot of editing for work and before that I did a lot of marking for university so I'm used to correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation. I can't claim to be linguist but my English is good and I can iron out a piece of work. I do use the British system for all of these technical aspects.
Generally, when I edit at work, I will correct technical aspects myself but raise questions with the original writer on anything like flow or meaning. For this reason, I prefer not to correct word usage unless it's glaringly obvious as I'd rather be sure that my guess on the original author's writing is correct.
My understanding of poetry is stronger than that of prose. I'm pretty familiar with all of the technical aspects of poetry and have read quite a lot of it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My two biggest strengths are correcting technical aspects and raising issues that don't make sense. I'll always do my best to let you know if it seems like the background information doesn't fit together, the characters are acting out of character or the motivation for something feels weak. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm still learning about the "dos and don'ts" of writing fiction. I know how to write and I'm logical but when it comes to fiction-specific technique I've got a long way to go. I've only recently met concepts like said-bookisms and tom swiftly's. For the best strategy on how to create or reveal a character, how to unravel a plotline and how to draw readers in, I can only give amateurish, reader impressions. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer reading fantasy. I do also enjoy romance and science-fiction and would be willing to help out in these genres. Although I don't normally read them on this site, I would also be more than willing to look at essays. As I've previously tutored and lectured at university, essays are probably one area where I can truly valuable advice.
For poetry, I like to read things based on authentic emotions or experiences. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't like reading anything with excessive swearing or sex. I also don't like things with demons or occultic overtones.
For poetry, I don't like reading random angst or things which rhyme for no particular reason. I don't have a problem with poetry rhyming but I get annoyed when people feel they have to make every poem they write rhyme. |
