Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well, since about last year, I decided that being a beta was something I'd be good at, given my own picky tastes and my love of pointing out mistakes in punctuation and spelling and stuff. One thing I will say is that I don't very much like romances, unless, of course, they are slash, so I'd be even harder on those kinds of stories. But other than that, I'm pretty open-minded about what I edit, and I have SOME free time, so I guess I should start getting practice as an editor now, before I go out into the big scary world expecting to get a job. As for what I expect of people wanting to acquire my services, I need for you to actually remember to contact me, rather than expect me to go looking for you. If you want my help, just send stuff right to me, I'll edit it, and send it straight back. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm particularly good at punctuation, but I tend to go for Victorian style punctuation; meaning, I like to use commas and semi-colons a lot, rather than just periods and stuff. I'm also good at picking out tense errors, homophone problems, spelling problems, and I like seeing a lot of vocabulary, so I'll probably offer more scholarly word choices at certain parts. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I get hasty and tend to overlook some things in my own writing, but I'm critical enough that I probably won't miss it if someone else does it, as I'm looking for that stuff rather than trying to get my own story across. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer to beta stories that involve slash of any kind (male or female), angst, or action. Fantasy is good, too. Oh, and drama. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Again, I dislike romance between males and females, as it's so...traditional, and it's been written a dozen times. There are very few options for someone wanting an original story in those instances. With slash, you can use the same old storyline, but by merit of being between two characters of the same sex, it becomes original and unconventional. I also don't particularly like really religious works, as I don't have enough knowledge in that area to be much of a judge of what's wrong and what's right. |
