Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Due to my schedule I can only accept a certain amount of stories at once. Sadly, I'm too busy at the moment to accept more. If you would like me to beta for you at a later date, however, I would be glad to. Feel free to message me.
I am thorough. I will beta everything about a story from technique and grammar to dialogue and character development.
As a beta, the format of my reviews is usually as follows:
What I thought of the piece as a whole,
the most major things that need to be worked on,
corrections for specific errors,
favorite lines and/or ideas in the piece,
closing advice.
I get very involved in the stories I beta. If you wish me to beta for you, expect to do a lot of back and forth messaging to discuss all aspects of your story. Conversation is an integral part of my beta-ing style.
I expect those that I beta for to first go over their story to eliminate as many errors as they can. I expect them to have at least some idea as to where their story is going. I expect them to finish what they start and not stop halfway through.
I prefer to use e-mail, though I can use DocX if necessary. If you want me to beta for you, e-mail or PM me and we’ll work something out. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am painstakingly meticulous. I have found errors in most published works. I will often read a piece three times; once to get the actual story and overall feel, a second time to record errors, and a third time to make sure I haven't missed anything. However, this means that I am in no way quick. A review on an average sized chapter usually takes me about three hours.
I have well-rounded beta-ing abilities. I will beta everything about your piece including; grammar, spelling, technique, format, voice, plot, continuity, clarity, viewpoint, story structure, perspective, scene construction and choreography, character development, dialogue, internal and external conflict, etc.
I will stick with your story until it is done. It doesn’t matter if it’s a two-page short or a ten book saga. As long as you will let me, I will beta.
I am adept at research. Especially when it comes to fantasy/action stories, I am very well versed in weapons and fighting.
I am open-minded. Blood and gore do not scare me. Neither does torture, sadistic villains, situations of intense peril, etc. I don't mind swearing as long as it's not overdone. Romance is fine, as long as it's nothing too explicit. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am very, very slow. Therefore, you must be patient.
I am sometimes rather obscure. I will say things in a complicated way and find it difficult to simplify.
I don’t always know how to phrase my suggestions. I will know that a sentence is wrong and will be able to tell you how to fix it, but won’t be able to tell you -why- it’s wrong.
I won't be able to pick out every mistake. As a human, I myself am susceptible to errors and I can't do much to change that.
I have difficulty being succinct. I often find that I go on for paragraphs when I could have easily summed up in just one sentence. I'm sure you've figured that out from reading this... |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I tend to prefer fiction with at least some elements of fantasy. I tend to prefer stories with humor. I like stories with twisted, convoluted, and interesting plots. I appreciate well thought out characters. I usually like it the longer the better.
High fantasy and D&D style stories are my personal favorites.
None of the above are requirements, just preferences. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't usually beta poems, though I do read them.
Please no explicit sex and no slash. |
