Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have an editor for a mother and so I've inherited an eye for grammar and continuity. If something doesn't make sense or is grammatically incorrect, I will catch it 9 out of 10 times. I've also read way too many stories on this website to be considered healthy and so I have a pretty good idea of the scope of writing styles and ideas used in stories on fictionpress. I love giving constructive criticism but I'm also good about giving compliments. As far as grammar goes, I’ll correct it right away, but as far as continuity goes, I’ll tell you that it doesn’t make sense and why and maybe give some advice on how to fix it, but I’m not going to rewrite anything. The stories I have to read have to be at least decently written, if there's a mistake every other word, or just badly written in general, I won't look at it. The stories also have to be interesting, or else I get bored really fast. If it's extremely cliche in a way that isn't satirical or humorous, I won't touch it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm a grammar and continuity magnet, I'm also really good at cutting out unnecessary descriptions or sections that slow the story down. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Commas. They're tricky little buggers and confuse the hell out of me. I tend to be one of those people who use way too many commas in my own writting. I also tend to a little on the cynical side at times and something that might seem cute to you, may just register as lame on my radar |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Stories about real people and real things. I like stories with characters that stand out from the crowd make an impression on people. I'm also a sucker for the sibling's best friend romantic cliche. Stories with some kind of meaning or underlying message and plots that don't drag on forever. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
-The supernatural of any kind: ghosts, werewolves, were-any other animals, and certainly not vampires. Monsters aren't my thing
-I'd be hard pressed to do a story surrounding gay or lesbian couples, not because I disagree with homosexuality or anything, just because they don't really catch my interest and tend to be the same story with different characters in my experience, but if you think yours is different, I'll give it a go.
-incest: romantic relationships between siblings, uncles and aunts, and even step siblings just don't sit right with me
-romantic relationships between children and authority figures or adults
-uncreative cliche, especially stories that advertise they are going to be cliche.
-mental dialogue, no one has conversations with their conscience.
-stories that start with the main character waking up in the morning.
-excessive angst |
