Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, my goal is to help you in whatever way you desire. I can help proofread for syntactical errors, I can help you develop a plot line or twist, or I can just be someone to read your work and give an honest critique. My criticisms will always be constructive, but they may be very blunt or somewhat abstract. I will never be scathing or overly harsh on you or your work, since the point is to try to help you.
My reading preferences (in addition to things like genre, category) tend more towards the intellectual or thoughtful. It is always easy to pick out the authors who have spent a great deal of time honing their craft. My only expectation is for those approaching me to have an open mind. It is not easy to listen to someone pick apart your prose, but sometimes it yields great results. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths usually lie in editing: checking grammar, easing/smoothing out transitions, and helping flesh out ideas. I try to encourage various methods of brainstorming, as everyone has a radically different style. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Obviously, I'm not perfect. It may take me a while to sit down and read your work, since i have a somewhat hectic class and work schedule (usually my only free time is after midnight). It's nothing personal, but weekdays don't usually leave me much time to breathe. There may be things I miss while reading your piece, or I may not give your exactly the critiques you were looking for. I do try, but sometimes authors are looking for things that I'm not able to give. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I do tend to prefer fiction over poetry, but only marginally. Horror/Suspense stories are usually among my favorites, but I do very much appreciate all the genres I selected. A good humor story is always appreciated, and I have a special place in my heart for SciFi (it's all Frank Herbert's fault). |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
There aren't any genres I absolutely will not read, but I usually try to steer clear of Romance and Angst. Nothing against those two genres, but the bad work overwhelmingly outnumbers the phenomenal ones, and I hate sifting through the ridiculous, clichéd love stories and whining angsty pieces to find the real gems. |
