Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I ask questions and expect good answers.
I critique in italics directly under each paragraph. Also, once I encounter a passage of the story that I can't get through due to absolute confusion or disinterest on my part, I send it back to the writer to fix right away. After that, you can show me the story again and I'll continue where I left off.
It helps if you show me your future plans for the story, such as character notes or outline. Usually the stuff that's most fixable lies inside the backstage of your story.
Please have a thick skin when dealing with me, but also remember that I am trying to be tactful and helpful at the same time. Thank you!
One more thing: I might ask you to look at one of my stories for feedback too, if I like you. :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very thorough as far as character development, plot development, and story flow go. I'm good at spelling and minor syntax issues. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Oh. Grammar. I'm not as familiar with the rules of grammar and the vocabulary of grammar as everyone thinks I am. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
If I want to be prissy about it, I think I can say that I like "speculative fiction" more than sci-fi or fantasy.
Please have proper formatting when submitting a story to me. I can't wade through walls of text or stories peppered with alien symbols. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
1. Tolkein-esque epics
2. Harry Potter-esque epics
3. Nothing against the works themselves, but I don't want to read something I've already seen before.
4. One-sided stories. If you don't know what I mean by this, I mean: No stories where only one side of an argument is presented. I want to see conflict, not walking-talking embodiments of a particular message. |
