Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I proofread for grammar, spelling, and will definitely take into account the form of art if it is in poetry format. If you would not like constructive criticism (which you do not have to accept), then I may not be right for you. Fluency and word choice are important, as are the way the poem or story looks. As for longer stories, keeping in character is tough and if you would be willing to work with me, I can help you make sure that the character does not start out as one person and end as someone else (this is especially difficult to do if you're used to writing for fanfiction and don't know how to create a new character's developed personality.) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I will not hold anything back to spare feelings, which in turn creates a better writer. I don't let my style of writing influence the person I'm betaing's style (even with a fine line behind that.) Grammatical errors, spelling errors, and different formatting are the easiest parts I get into. If you would like to see me for more complicated works, I need to be able to work with you on the story and your development of the characters so I can be sure to make the right suggestions. I can work well with both newly starting writers and long standing ones, both in different ways. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If I can't wrap my mind around your story or poem and do not understand the themes or vocabulary, it might be difficult for me to correct anything along those lines. I may not always give perfect advice, which is a burden most are stuck with. I will not tolerate any stories that I think aren't salvageable and I may not always agree with the topic the story or poem is written on. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer not to beta any stories that the author or authoress doesn't plan to finish/have much motivation towards finishing. I expect you to spend time figuring out how to make the story better before publication, which requires time on my part and your part. If I work with you towards creating something, please don't let me down by giving up on the story without giving me some notice. I will not tolerate carelessness towards stories- if I'm going to spend time with you, I would like it to be well-earned. Poetry, on the other hand, is much easier and I'm fairly accepting toward that area. Rhyme-scheme and fluency I pay attention to, and if you have no interest in perfecting that (however, if it's free verse, then clearly you don't need rhyme-scheme ;)), then I wouldn't like to work with you. Please be understanding of my selection- if a story or poem is triggering or could be dangerous to me and my health, I would like to politely decline on occasion if you ask. Most of the time that is not the case. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Stories with extreme mature themes, poems with no effort put into them, and anything that is carelessly written. I will not go through, by myself, and correct all of the "u, r, den, da, etc", capitalization and severe grammatical issues, or work that isn't spell-checked or even looked over. If you are not willing to work with me, then I will not betaread your work. |
