Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Have y'all read the prompt on this profile? Talk about ridiculous. Anyway, I'll try to make this as quick and painless as possible. As a beta-reader, I will be editing the grammar and spelling of your stories. I may also provide suggestions for alternate word choices, sentence structure, etc, but I will not brainstorm ideas for the continued development of your story unless you ask. I cannot stand it when people come up with endings to a story I've written, and act as though their suggestion is the best choice. So while I'll gladly toss ideas back and forth with you, I won't give you unasked for commentary. I do go to school during the day, but I will have your stories edited as soon as possible (meaning they will be the top priority, ahead of the development of my own stories). Basically I'll give you the best help I can, answering your questions as well as I'm able. My involvement is up to your discretion. It is, after all, your story. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am very good with words. I love them, and enjoy interchanging them to find the most appropriate choice. The vocabulary and diction aspects of writing are definitely my strengths, though again, you have the final call on any and all word choices. There is always an underlying motivation for a particular literary decision. Sometimes that is more important than 'the most appropriate tone.' I am also good at mimicking styles of writing, most notably the sentence structure and rhythem. This helps the writing flow more smoothly, and may perhaps ease the transition from the edited pieces to the original pieces. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to ramble, as those purusing my profile may know all to well. Condensing areas of text is not something I do easily, so be warned: if your style is particularly clipped, or if a section is meant to get the mostfacts crammed into the smallest space, I may not be your girl. Also, thanks to the standardized aspects of my education, I tend to write in a very formulaic style. For example, I listed two strengths, and two weaknesses. I'll have the same number of lines filed for each. While I'm working on this, I may not be the best fit for a particularly creative writing style, in that I approach editing in the same sysematic way. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Fiction writing is definitely my thing. Not only to I enjoy most every genre, but I feel it provides more outlets for expansion on and branching out of the original story line. Within fiction, I work well with romance, humor, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, drama, mystery, and horror, and perhaps some others I've forgotten. I work very well with light pieces, especially dealing with irony and satire. Narration and stream-of-consciousness writings are also preferred. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
While I don't have a problem editing non-fiction pieces, they're not my first choice. In an autobiographical piece, I wouldn't feel comfortable correcting an interpretation of events, as I wasn't there. Also, on educational essays, I would not feel comfortable saying that I had double-checked the facts and found them accurate, when in actuality I had not done so. I don't mind checking background information, but hunting down specific details seems a little tedious. I'm also not geared toward dark or depressing pieces, and I have no real skill in describing action sequences. |
