Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I will beta for ANYONE who requests, but I feel it is fair to tell you that I can be a little brutal. I don't flame writers, but I do use a very critical eye, and I will not hesitate to point out plotholes or things that just don't make sense. I do not make any changes to the story itself, but instead type in suggestions in parentheses after the paragraph. If I correct spelling or grammar, I use coloured font to show you that I changed it, in case it was intentional as diction or something like that. I usually take a day or two to beta, unless you happen to send it while I'm on the computer, which is typically about 4 pm - 11 pm, unless I work, in which case I will be on 10:30 pm - Midnight. Please keep in mind that my time zone is in the US, along the East coast. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am VERY good at spotting poor grammar, and assessing sentence flow. I also have an eye for identifying voice, and notice if it changes or varies to much in a given character or situation. I also remember exact details (people's names, ages, given years, etc...) and noticing when these details clash or become inconsistant. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't always notice subtle spelling mistakes, because of spelling variations in different parts of the world. I do notice glaringly obvious ones (example, when someone says "threw" instead of "through" - very common mistake). |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
While I will take on ANY story, I prefer young adult, romance, comedy, and fantasy. I myself write yaoi/slash/mXm, so I guess that would be my specialty. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
There is nothing that I will refuse to beta, but my least favourite genres are historical and spiritual fiction. I'm also not wild about poetry, but I don't know if poets even require betas. |
