Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Just to warn you, I use a 1-10 rating system, which is admittedly hypocritical of me because I hate to attach numbers to things...but when I'm critiquing a story, I feel that the 1-10 really helps me cut to the chase and tell you whether or not your story is worth anyone's time.
Other than that, I don't have any 'requirements' of anyone wishing to 'acquire my services'....hm, makes me sound like a choosy hooker guy or something...I'll read whatever, though naturally, I'd prefer to stick to my genre(s) of choice. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I spot grammar and spelling errors in others' work easily. I really look for character quirks and personality traits, and can point out when they've gone out of character. I know the difference between flowery language and prose-y imagery. I know what to say if you suck, and I know what to say if you're good. I'm easily impressed by a good intro paragraph and a good first chapter, so if I see this in a story, I'll be as constructive as I possibly can be to help it along. I'm not afraid of weird or "perverted" stories, as I write them myself. I put effort in most all of my criticism, and I put effort into reading the story, though I will skip over paragraphs if I'm in a hurry...but who of us doesn't? |

I dwell on details sometimes, and sometimes if I don't like the story (or if I'm tired), I'll skim over a paragraph or two to speed the process up. My mood effects how I read and how much I like your story, so if I'm in a good mood, I'll focus more on good details, and if I'm in a bad mood, I'll focus on the bad. I judge books by their covers...or formats. In other words, I'm a sucker for neat paragraphs and horizontal lines. Obscure quotes are also a plus, and whether this is good or bad, I'm unsure... |

Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Typical, boring abuse stories or cutter stories. If you think you have something unique, fine, I'll give it a try, but PLEASE no 'beautiful-girl-gets-locked-in-basement-by-her-fat-ugly-father' or 'I-cut-because-the-pain-feels-good' stories. I made the mistake of spending hours wading through those in hopes of a gem when I first joined this site, and it was just too much at once...so now I don't want to see it ever again :). Maybe it's because I can't relate to either, but really, you've gotta understand me guys. |
