Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello everyone! Keep in mind that I'm a fellow writer, one that understands the pressures and frustrations of cranking out a novel or perfecting a short story. I've had different experiences, and therefore will have different perspectives and opinions on your writing than another writer would, so it's always good to have more than one opinion. I love all forms of fiction and poetry, but fantasy and romance especially pique my interest.
If you would like me to beta one of your works, please make sure that it is in the best grammatical condition it can be. I don't mind the occasional error - that's why I'm beta-ing, after all - but careless mistakes really bother me. While I'm not setting an age requirement, a developed vocabulary is almost a must.
As a beta-reader, I will always critique your work to the best of my ability. While I'm not a professional editor, I'm very good at identifying techinical things like grammar errors, flow, and plot discrepancies, and I can also offer suggestions for more concise sentences, a tighter plot, confusing passages, et cetera. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
You can count on me to be honest in my critique. I'll be sure to tell you what I liked and what I didn't, but I will always have two sides. I never only praise a piece of writing, or only point out its flaws. I read more than the average person, and devour "create a novel" books like Edmund and his turkish delight. I'll have some good advice for you up my sleeve. Since I first wrote this profile, I've honed my grammar skills and can now say I'm very good with grammar. Yay, right? |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm a bit lazy, and tend to procrastinate, which isn't the best philosophy for a betareader, but my absolute limit before getting a story back is seven days - anything past that, and, well, I'm most likely sick and dying, that's how dedicated I am. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love originality. If you believe your plot has a particularly delicious twist, or some really snazzy, loveable characters, bring it on. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not a big fan of horror or cliched plot lines. If you feel your story has a "done-before" feel, please take it elsewhere. That would be the first thing I'd comment on, is if it didn't feel like the story was reeling me in or keeping me interested. |
