Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Alright, I'll be the first to admit that I'm fairly new at beta-reading, at least on the internet. I've Beta-read for my friends and fellow classmates - both essays and stories. I'm a freshman in college right now majoring in Anthropology (which is a department that requires quite a bit of critical reading and writing) and I'm also minoring in English, so I believe I know what I'm talking about when it comes to correction and such.
When I beta-read, I will most likely read through the story a couple times to digest everything before I really get into correcting. I like things to be nearly perfect (if not, completely perfect) when I return them to you, so the process might take several days - especially when school is kicking my rear. I'll promise to have it done rather speedily though, probably no longer than a week. If there are circumstances where it'll take longer, I'll always PM you.
My goal is to make your writing better, therefore, while I beta-read, I'll also include comments on things that I like and things that I didn't like that much. I don't want to make you feel bad - or make it seem like you have no business writing - so when I give con-crit, I'll try to lay it on as nicely as possible. Also, I'll never change your writing. I'll either put my corrections or suggestions next to the error in a different color or in parenthesis.
I'm fairly flexible. If my beta-reading style is not what you're looking for, then you could PM me and let me know what you want me to focus on. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I really pride myself on my attention to detail. I can almost always drag a chapter out or give you more suggestions on how to make a particular scene more vivid. I'm fairly good with vocablary, and I love character and plot developement. To be completely honest, I think that a story is only as good or as interesting as the plot or characters. Grammar definitely takes a back-burner, but like I said, I'll try to pay attention to everything. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Commas, commas, commas. I almost always have to re-read my writing or get someone to check my use of commas. It's easier for me to spot others' commas mistakes rather than my own, though. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I absolutely LOVE Christian Fiction and Southern Literature! I also have a soft spot for historicals (though I'm more familiar with modern history rather than earlier history), mysteries, romances, and young adult fiction. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at plays, either. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Fantasies are alright, though sometimes they can get a bit over my head. It's easier for me to digest the "real-world" type stuff. I don't really like to read stories that have overly explicit violence or sex or homosexual relationships. |
