Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I haven't betad for a while and when I used to do it for friends, I didn't know it was called that! If you want your chapters thoroughly pulled apart, the weak bits picked at, extra words pruned out, wrong words replaced and sentences re-structured, then I'm the gal for you, but be-warned, I'm very thorough and it can come across as harsh. If I was a teacher, I'd be the one who hands your work back covered in red pen, but gives you an A anyway.
If I think something is worth beta-ing then I am going to pick it to shreds because I believe that it can be built up again as a better and stronger piece of writing.
Character motivation is my big driving force, so whenever I'm reading something I'm always trying to make sense of actions. If you take a look at my writing, I hope you'll get a sense of that. When I'm editing for someone I tend to point out bits that don't work. I will always try to say *why* they don't work, and if it's wanted (and I can come up with them) offer alternatives.
Having directed you towards my writing, it's probably wise to point out that I'm awful at spotting my own mistakes. I'm not a spelling genius, but I can generally spot errors made by other people. Also, I'm going to be correcting you in British English, which may or may not be an issue.
I'm willing to talk through suggestions I make and problems the author has, as I know this can really help. I'm willing to give in-put on aspects of plot etc, but hope that the author will have enough ideas to carry themselves through. I don't want to turn into an ideas factory. I struggle to have enough for my own writing as it is!
I'm not the type to be obviously ego-boosting, but I will never criticise without reason and suggesting a way forward. I'm willing to work either on re-drafting finished projects, or on things currently being written. Both are exciting things to do. I hope the things I have to offer will be useful to you! |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I get thoroughly involved in any project I take on, which means I will have as many nightmares as you do about the consistency of what happens next, in everything from character motivation to that unexpected plot twist!
I've been through university, so in theory I should be able to write fairly well and spot most errors.
I'm not going to let you get away with lazy shortcuts, even if I take them myself! I am very critical at times.
I have a sense of humour!
And, finally, I think I can say (after having it battered into me by an old beta of mine) I understand the importance of realistic dialogue. |

As I've said, spotting spelling errors is not my strong point, but I do try.

If I rule out genres I know I will live to regret it, but I'd like the stories to have at least a general sense of direction, and not be overly long. Some 100, 000 word stories are great. Most are in need of a hedge trimmer. If you come to me for advice on poetry, you are a fool. |
