Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well...generally, I read and try to pick out grammatical/spelling mistakes. I will also drop books that are not interesting enough to keep me reading, so that's something to keep in mind if you get me to beta your work. I tend to be rather harsh, and I'm not very good with praises, so you might be unlucky enough to get a very negative review with no positives mentions, although I try to avoid that. And if you really think that I'm too harsh, well, then, I hope you find someone who's more suitable.
You'll find that I put a lot of opinion into my reviews. Although mainly, when people get betas, they hope for someone to look for grammatical mistakes, plot inconsistencies, etc, I believe that the main thing about writing is first impression.
I'm not into emotional things (especially teenage/other types of angst, but I make very occasional exceptions), but I do read them anyway. Mostly, I prefer ideas over emotions. However, I do admit that that's partially due to my inability to play around with words and manipulate them for the effect intended.
Depending on the type of person you are, 'flamer' will have different meanings. Ignoring the fact that some people love getting flamed (either for attention or the fact that someone's actually helping them out), all I will say is that I do not (read: TRY TO NOT) attack a piece of writing without justification. If I dislike it that much, I won't review at all. And you're free to argue with me. I: a) don't make you pay for to say something back, and; b) don't/am not stupid enough to hold online grudges.
Basically, in a review, I will try to pick out grammatical mistakes (point them out and tell you what's wrong). If the mistakes are too repetitive, I will state that too. Opinions will be stated, and then, saving the best till last, I'll tell you the good stuff.
And...really, that's about it! Have a nice day :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I think I'm relatively good at picking out grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors. However, having said that, I tend to mingle opinion in with the rules, so keep that in mind. Everyone has their way of doing things, and unfortunately, that's the way I do it. And if you happen to only make occasional mistakes and show that you get the general idea, I may not bother to deal with such matters.
I rely a lot on my first impression to judge the writing. Although that seems like a very...childish, unfair way to do things, I believe it's important, because really, that's what people do. If they dislike it, they will switch off immediately. Most people only read most books once. First impression is important. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can pick out problems with wording and grammatical errors, however, I'm not very good at expressing in words, which is why I prefer to write emotionally neutral stories. So although I can help you find errors, I may not always be able to help correct them to the way you like it, especially if you like emotion and all the fuss.
Also, I tend to put personal thoughts and opinions into my review, along with the grammatical stuff. Although I will try to cut that down if you so badly need me too, I don't guarantee anything.
Slightly irrelevant to the topic of beta-reading, I lack the ability to give out convincing praises, even if I mean them. Be prepared for a hard time (in a nice way, of course). |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like to read thought-provoking stories, especially those who go against what is normal, providing that enough justification is given for the reason why your point of view is so different.
I tend to read fantasy fiction, although if you genuinely have a very good crime/mystery or sci-fi story, I will also read that. More generally, I like complex plots (or at least interesting ideas), well-written work and I accept most forms of humour.
And whatever my preferences say, really, I read pretty much everything as long as it's good enough to keep my drawn in. I'm not seriously allergic to any genre. Ignore the K-T rating if it's rated for violence. If you're desperate (and no, that's not a chance to subtly praise myself), I will go above the K-T rating for other things too, but keep in mind that I might be biased and attack the idea more than the writing, although I will try my best not to. I like to stay kid-friendly, because I am mentally the youngest kid you'll ever know. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Well, anything not said above would probably be things I would rather not read, but really, there isn't much I don't. Too much romance and that sort of stuff will put me off your story, too, and you might get a bad review. You can send me freestyle poetry (or any poetry, for that matter), except I won't be able to give you much opinion on that. Nothing too emotional (especially angst!). And nothing too adult-themed.
Now that's all said, have a nice day :) |
