Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been writing since an incredibly young age. Originally, I just wrote poetry. Lots of poetry. Something in me doesn't allow that anymore, so now I write fiction. Lots of fiction. I hope to publish Did Not Recognize, which is at over 300 pages in the handwritten, sometime in the near future.
Correcting spelling and grammar is all well and good, but is not really that important. Anything that comes to me will be analyzed at a higher degree than that. I will try to get a feel for the writer's style, and try to point out things that don't fit. As the character is my passion, I will also help iron over flaws in composure and consistency, especially in regards to dialog.
Also important to me is proper diction and rhetoric. If an affected ethos doesn't stay true to itself, which I am told is a common problem in writing, I hope to help gloss it over. For a strong ethos is important in a narrative, no matter what the modernists say.
The times I have betaread before, I added color-coded comments and corrections. The different colors separate necessary corrections from stylistic suggestions, so the author is still in control. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I love stylistic writing and characters, as well as metaphor. All my own stories have a higher meaning, a message I am trying to communicate. For that reason, style has to remain consistent, or change in a purposeful way. Also dialog. I love dialog. Great stuff, a simple way to reveal a character's traits or flaws.
I probably have the most open mind anyone has ever seen. One of my stories is focused on a communist revolution in the United States, following an American Lenin. New things interest and excite me, which may well be revealed in my own copious writing. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My own spelling and grammar has been historically dismal, and probably is still flawed. But oh well.
I'm probably still well over average, though. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would like to read over supernatural/comical stories. However, I have very little real preference, as long as it is not overly angsty.
Middle-class white people have nothing to depress over. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Emo-y, depressive stories just annoy me. I don't care if your little suburban life is so TERRIBLE, I don't want to hear about it. My own opinion probably comes from my own experiences, which I did not complain about.
I would also PREFER fiction to poetry, but whatever is fine. |
