Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Since it's summer now, I have more time to read your work. I'll read almost anything, but if it doesn't keep my attention, I'll send it back to you. I can't read dry works. I don't like super long epic works of science fiction or anything like that. I can be brutally honest or not, depending on what you want.
Anyone who wants me to beta should send me a PM or email, whichever, detailing exactly what they'd like me to do with their story and how they'd like corrections made. I work better with a deadline, so please tell me when you'd like your story done by. I usually take up to a week to read and correct.
I have Microsoft Word 2003 and know how to use it, but I don't know how to use anything other than that. It's easiest for me if you tell me exactly what you want.
Don't let my age discourage you, I can do whatever you'd like. Language and mild sex doesn't bother me: I go to a public school. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm a grammar Nazi. My friends have nicknamed me Webster the Dictionary and the Spelling Wizard. If you need work with spelling or grammar, let me know. I can work with anything from chatspeak to the world's best grammarian.
I'm good at helping with plot holes, and I'll gladly offer suggestions on what I think should happen next if you'd like them. I know how to appreciate a good work of fiction and I'll point out what I think is good and what I don't like.
I'm good at descriptions as well.
If you'd like help with research for a story, I'm happy to help with that. I'm fairly good with content. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't work well without a deadline. I have a tendency to let things go until it's too late. I'm also not good without direction, so tell me exactly what you want from me. I'll let you know if I can't do it.
I hate symbolism and most likely won't pick up on it in a story. To sum that up without a long, drawn out conversation: I believe that books shouldn't be read and then overanalyzed to death over, for example, a letter. It does not matter to me.
I also don't do well with poetry, for the same reason stated above.
Also, I'm terrible at summarizing things and tend to get a bit wordy in descriptions. I hem and haw a lot and have trouble saying what I want to say at times. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like action/adventure stories. I appreciate good horror stories as well, but I won't read anything that's all blood and gore. It needs to have an underlying plot. I enjoy young adult literature especially, and some romance is okay. I like romance as an underlying plot. I can appreciate all types of endings, sad, happy, whatever, and I like suspense and mystery in stories. I'll also read supernatural on a case-by-case basis. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Smut/Slash/Sex stories are not okay with me. Stories sent to me must have a well-developed plot (or the author must have an idea of the plot they would like in the story but don't know how to write it). Plot-less works are not acceptable. I also don't like poetry very much, unless it's humorous. I don't particularly like historical fiction, but I will read some on a case-by-case basis. Historical fiction is a lower priority with me. |
