Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a reader who corrects spelling and grammar, so prepare to be nitpicked! I also give comments on writing style. This can include pointers on run-on sentences and sentences with an overabundance of clauses. It can also include thoughts on whether a sentence or paragraph is overly wordy or awkward. I believe in what English teachers call the rule of "show, don't tell," which means that I greatly appreciate subtlety over obvious statements. Show the reader; they do not need to be told outright. I will also try to express exactly what I like about your piece. I believe in helpful praise.
That said, I do give constructive criticism, and I expect my comments to be read and thought about. Spelling and grammar ought to be corrected; style is up to you. However, in return for my time and thought about your piece, I request your time and thought in using my work. I give constructive criticism not to punish, not to offend, but to help. All the things I suggest correction of in your work are things I seek to correct in my own work. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can catch typos and spell check errors well. I give coherent comments on style and technique. I'm not afraid to point out confusing sentences, and I give suggestions on how to fix them. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can sometimes miss grammar mistakes. Also, people will always disagree about style, so you may not like whatever comments I give. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Historical fiction is a favorite, as are all mythical creatures; I also like general fantasy, and poetry. A good sci-fi story is appreciated. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Religious stories, overly angsty poetry- although I'm not completely anti-angst. |
