Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a very picky reader. The pieces that are brought to my attention are those that have interesting plot lines, well developed characters and the ability to write at a fairly high level. I will read your pieces and critique them as I see fit. I will search for 1)grammatical errors, 2)plot holes/inconsistancies, and finally 3)flow/phrasing, in that order. I expect the pieces to be fairly lengthy. I do not like reading things a couple hundred words at a time. Ideas are not fully conveyed in such a short amount of writing. Pieces that include immense amounts of parentheses do not make me happy. I prefer long paragraphs with vivid detail as to what is happening, to long pieces of dialouge. If your piece has a lot of dialouge, I will challenge you to use more action and descriptors to push the plot and ideas along. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have been writing since I was little and have been enrolled in the highest level of english possible since the sixth grade. My writing level far exceeds those of my peers and my strengths lie in the grammatical and phrasing fields. Spelling and correct word usage are also my strong suits. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have a tenancy to skim instead of read. Though I can absord the plot, sometimes I get lost in the story and skip over the errors. It will take me a couple tries to work through a piece, just to make sure I have all of the kinks worked out. I also have a problem with wanting the writer to write the way I would. Sometimes I alter things that don't necessarliy need to be changed, I just think they would sound better phrased other ways. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like adventure stories with a touch of romance and I like those that have plot-lines deep enough that it takes a while to sort them out. I like to read something that keeps me guessing and attempting to figure something out with the characters. Stories that are set in current or slightly futuristic times, do not include creatures that do not exist (i.e. faires, dragons, trolls, etc), and have strong, able bodied main characters catch my attention. Round characters, not flat, also hold my attention well. If things can keep my attention, it is more likely that I will spend more time and effort beta reading them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not particularly like Sci-fi stories, nor do I like fantasy. I don't like to read things that have characters that I cannot imagine. Mystical creatures that are not related to humans do not interest me. Exceptions include vampires, werewolves, etc. Stories that take place before present time, such as medievel times or any time before the late 20th century do not interest me and will not allow me to want to keep reading and editing. |
