Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am an avid reader and writer. My style would be to read the story first for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Spelling and correct word usage are important to me. Errors distract me from enjoying a story. Next I'd look for inappropriate repetitive statements. Sometimes repeating a word can create a feeling, but I find I, and other writers, tend to over use certain phrases. I also look for strong characters and maintenance of that character and their traits.
Though suspending disbelief is perfectly acceptable, I also look for accuracy. If a condition is experienced, say small pox, the symptoms should be consistent with the actual condition. If a scientist is researching an animal, the habitat, etc. should reflect that animal. It builds a stronger story and keeps the reader involved if they can learn something new, and if it is a familiar subject, it allows the reader to continue and not be distracted or frustrated by inaccuracy. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Reading, writing and spelling. Research. Honesty with kindness and consideration of the writer. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Being too kind at times and fearing that I will state things in a way that might be hurtful. I am cautious, but as a writer I know the love I have for my characters, etc. I tread too lightly at times. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Humor is wonderful, but I'll do angst too. Romance. Fantasy. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I am not particularly fond of vampires and the like. I enjoy a good scary story if it is suspenseful and exciting. I also don't like anything that involves human torture. |
