Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been writing for 17 months now and I'd like to think I'm a good beta. I love editing stories, it's soothing. If I let loose I'm cruel and honest (think Simon Cowell). But I CAN hold back and be nice and honest. When I have a lot of time on my hands, I can give long, detailed reviews. Yup: I won't just correct mistakes. I'll point out good points, bad points. Sentence flow, plot, characters, emotions.
I watch a lot of TV, so I know about the outside world (outside of this site. Yes, there is a world outside of this site. I bet that surprised a few of you people out there.) So any talk about TV shows or other things like that, I'll know. I read a lot so I know a good story when I see one. I'm quite good at writing summaries, just not for myself, well, kind of...
I have a vast knowledge of books, TV shows (as I mentioned above) and music. I hate it when a story is too long (100 chapters for example and/or more than 100 000 words.) Otherwise I get discouraged. I won't beta French stories but I can speak and write fluent French so if you have French dialogue or anything I can help. Same with Dutch (kinda). Oh, and I'm learning Spanish. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm a great speller and the reason I'm good at noticing mistakes is because they kind of hurt my eyes. (I can't keep writing my sentence if I made a mistake, I never leave mistakes for later.)
I'm also good with making sure there's a sense to sentences and stories. If the reader can't understand what's going on, that's not too good! I'm okay with the flow of the story, although I can't help with extremely complicated plots. I'm also great with grammar, verbs, logic.
I've gotten good at realistic dialogue. And each character having their own way of speaking. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not good with time. For example, the time line of things. I need to make complicated charts to keep track of what happened when. Even though I'm brilliant (arrogant? Maybe, but I am pretty damn good) with the English language, there are still things I don't know.
I suck at arguments between characters. You'd be on your own for that. Same for organizing your plot. Plot is my biggest weakness. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer romance, supernatural, humor, action, horror. I love poetry but I'd rather not beta it. I love dark stories, very dark. I'm kinda morbid but very cheerful. Basically I'm weird. Or not. Whatever. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm okay with anything. Seriously. But that does NOT mean I'll read M rated slash with graphic sex and blood during sex and anything weird. That's just too much. I'm okay with M rated stories, slash, graphic sex and blood. Just not together. It becomes too much.
Extra: I'll beta historical fiction, but make sure YOU do the research necessary for your story. I am willing to help a bit with research, if I have time. |
