Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm currently in college for an English Lit & Writing major, and my goal is to become a fiction editor. I primarily edit fiction or creative non-fiction, and I'm not very helpful on poetry. I'm currently working in my university's writing center as a tutor, so I have experience helping other people with writing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
If your story is complete, I'm good at finding plot inconsistencies. I'm good at proofreading and grammar correcting, so I can make sure readers aren't distracted by simple errors. I've taken several classes on creative writing, so I can help brainstorm ideas if you're stuck. I'm a stickler for character development, because I think that's a big part of what makes a story interesting. I can usually look things over thoroughly on a timely matter. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Since I'm in college, I don't have infinite time on my hands. If you send me a chapter to look over, it may take me up to a week, depending on what kind of things I have due in my classes. If you send things to me on a chapter by chapter basis with significant time gaps between the chapters, I tend to forget some of the details of your plot and won't catch the inconsistencies. Obviously, I'm still learning too, so I won't be able to make your story perfect. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm a big fan of fantasy and action/adventure stories. I also prefer ones that have elements of other genres mixed in, especially romance, supernatural, spiritual, mystery, or historical. I read cliches, but in the long run, most of the ones I've read aren't all that great. Give me a story with an exciting, original plot and strong characters, and I'll be proud to be a beta. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Seriously: I can't handle stories that base the entire plot on two characters having sex, especially when it happens over and over and in great detail. Romance it great for a secondary story, but I'm not too fond if it's the only plot going on. The same sort of thing applies to horror. If the entire point of your story is blood and gore, I'd rather not be your beta.
P.S. - I don't read slash, so please don't ask me to beta for that. |
