This is an excellent, well-written story. Not only was it thought provoking, but the way you presented your ideas with rather humourous cynicism, really seemed like a good technique in getting the points across.

I agree with your outlooks on romance which may be one of the reasons I enjoyed the story so much. I also think that you did an excellent job describing your love for Alice Springs. It reminds me a little of my own sort of bitter-sweet fondness for my home in the Virginia mountains, where if the nats won't get you, the rattle-snakes and bears most definately will (or else the suicidal deer who like to throw themselves at your car hood).
