The last bit of this chapter was a little confusing, as it seemed to skip time quite quickly. I almost thought it was going to end up being just a dream of Jessica's, but apparently it wasn't. Did we lose a few paragraphs? Just wondering, because your continuity has never been this jolty before.

*sighs* I should've known that their happiness couldn't last forever; that it would be one day be torn. If only love could conquer all. But the only thing love surely can't conquer is the very force that had plagued the lives of everyone in the United States in the early 1860s: death. To think Dan had spent four years of his life staring death in the face, watching it suck at the lives of his comrades, as they bled to death before his very eyes. And now it's come to claim him.

The only bright to this is that he has now joined the beloved friends he lost during the war. (Hey, I'm trying to be optimistic here.)

That was really good, well paced and thoughtful.

Happy, but sad too. Waiting to see how this turns out.
