Once I had a friend who was on the edge of committing suicide. I told him "You better be damn sure it's what you really want, because that's one decision there's no going back on". He never did.
I'm sure there are some cases where suicide is acceptable. What I don't believe is that anyone who's in such a state is thinking clearly enough to make a rational decision.

I think that often people who aren't the "norm" *are* considered insane. As recently as the 1970s, in fact, homosexuality was listed as a mental illness. It is a sad thing.

First to Essence: One, I totally agree. Who is the real judge who determines if someone is insane? Who sets the standard and why? Awesome work girl; you have the potential of being someone great and a leader of a revolution, if you're not already!

Second to The Infamous Shiro Kitsune: What the hell is up with you? One, you are speaking such BS and it shows your obvious ignorance on the subject of insanity. My really good friend was sent to an insane asylum. They weren't insane at all but some fool decided that because they were unique--that they must be insane. Second, uniqueness does exist; it is a homogenous society that does not. My friend was quite sane and comprehends things such as the laws of physics and quantum physics that most people at a young age would not even desire to read, yet understand what they ARE reading. But because of his brilliance and ability to see things others could not, he was classified as insane when really it was his unique ability of insight that set him apart. So, don't talk about things that your pathetic, diminutive brain could not comprehend. That's really all I have to say and if you would like to respond, which I doubt you have the intelligence to do so correctly, e-mail Essence. She knows where to find me.

In a sense, do most of the people today know who they are or waht they want? You implore us to be different, to be jeered, but be different just for the sake of it is almost like letting conformity win.

Yeah. Honestly I just skipped to chapter twelve in my last review after reading chapters one and six, because its title applied to my personal experience. Then I got to looking at the other reviews, and decided the rest of the essays looked pretty damn interesting.
Well, my comments are actually about the same. Keep up the good work. I really agree with what you have to say about American pop culture. Look into the history of the 1950s and the 1920s for some more material--the similarities are striking: the conformity issues in the 1950s, the hedonism in the 1920s. I also like how you stress thinking for yourself above all. Do you know anything about Ralph Waldo Emerson and Transcendentalism? I think you'd really like him. Anyway, I'd like to see some more on these essays!

yeah, i hate crying at school. If you'll permit me a storytime moment, one time in band class our teacher yelled at "the clarinet section" (she was looking directly at me and i was the one who had messed up) and i of course started crying, right there, in front of her, on the first row, with the guy next to me like, "are you ok?"
I also want to say kudos to your free speech series. Someone has to break through the mold.

Bravo. It's about damn time someone wrote about what they really felt.

While it's perfectly understandable for certain disgruntled citizens to be fed with pop culture in general, I believe that there's a solid reason for the birth of art as a commercial cash crop.

People don't write books or sings songs for a living just because they feel like it. In the end, no matter how many times you say "I love doing what I do" or "I can't imagine not singing", no matter how much you say you love your fans, it all comes down to money. Can you eat a painting? Can you drink a song? People like BS and Timberlake rake in truckloads of cash because they have what the majority of young prepubescent teens want. And it doesn't matter if what they have is totally meaningless, if it can earn a buck, then it's all fine and dandy in the world of artistic capitalism.

Can art and business mix? It is like asking whether religion can coexist with science. It's for you to decide.

Without the fame and above all the cash that comes with it, a career in any form of art would prove to be quite fruitless. As we're all probably aware of, the ignorant phillistines of America who need to be spoonfed government propaganda every day, won't pay you to express yourself. They want you to do what they want to see. So you see here the underlying rule in everything now, thanks to capitalism: "The customer is always right."

If the "omega group" were to rebel against the "aces" wouldn't it turn them into the new "ace group"? Such is the law of society, as dictated by Marxism. Once the lower class topples the upper class, they become the new upper class. As you can see, this cycle will continue on and on until one side can manage to freeze the social structure.

I have often thought long and ** why capitalism works like it does. It revolves around pure human nature. Greed, ruthlessness, vengeance, lust, despair, a feeling of "stickin' it to my boss, these are the stones that built this great nation. Not hope. Not love. Not freedom. Not justice. Can love buy a meal? Can hope get you a down payment on a car? Can justice move you out of that one room shack into a bigger shack?

Think about it.

Looking on your reviews, it's obvious you're nothing but an idiot preaching to the idiotic masses. Keep preaching, your words fall on ears to stupid to realize there is no truth in anything you speak, write, or think for that matter. I can only hope that you're not trying to give breed to a new generation of people who are even more ignorant and blind than the last one. Have fun, you stupid, stupid twit.
