I thought it was well written (although the opening was probably overwritten, and I could have lived without the cricketing and ribbeting). Not really sure about the ending though - I'm not sure what kind of effect you were aiming for (humorous or tragic or maybe there's some allegory or symbolism there that's wasted on me) but it just struck me as a weird ending - would anybody really do that in real life?
