You have something going in the opening chapters -- it's funny, believable, upscale, mildly sophisticated, if heavy on the drama. I do enjoy your sense of humor coming through -- the "badly done-up girl" line is nicely turned, as is the punchline of the fourth chapter. Anais is a great character -- you have to push through her hard side to get to her soft side, but you can tell there is one. The vox populi of "good" girls are perfectly captured middle-minded, empty-souled fools just waiting for some thrust to sweep them up. Flaws? King's family is poorly considered; the half-sister, daughter of the mistress deal is a touch farfetched -- why would such a prominent guy in the community be sleeping with the kind of woman who gives up her baby? Since you'll developing this in a later chapter, you might to think about saying goodbye to the Catcher in the Rye connection. |
