It's kinda silly though, because kids really never notice such stuff (I sure as hell never did... or maybe I was just an exceedingly oblivious child... ^_^;;) and the older audiences should know better than to get all upset over it. You know, so many of the 'classic' literature (in English) that kids will be made to read later on in school have so much of this stuff that the translators are trying to edit out. And if a kid says, "Oh, I read 1984/The Metamorphosis/One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", people would go, Oh wow! But entertainment that has some of these themes are considered to be bad, and must be edited. >,< It makes me mad. And oh god have I rambled. I'm sorry for makin' you read all this ^_^;; I really just wanted to say that I liked this essay ^_^;;

This was very good! I'm glad you wrote this, it was amazingly un-biased and so true! I get so annoyed at american dubs. I pretty much boycotted Card Captor Sakura because it was so mercilessly slaughtered, and I haven't watched an English episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! in months since they've changed the story so drastically in parts to make it impossible to continue the series (They gave the Nameless Pharaoh a name, so that rules out the dub needing to continue after Battle City)

I just found out about the Yugi-** thing, though! My GriffinFire's friend Fade lent her this copy of what I think was the YGO manga, but was called a 'graphic novel.' And it was like, WOAH. *snickers*

Yes, I actually did read the entire thing. 'Twas very interesting! I didn't know some of the stuff about the Final Fantasy series, and even Yu-Gi-Oh... Yugi's a ** fan in the Japanese version?! O_O. Somehow, I've never heard that before. I haven't watched a few of the other series you mentioned, but it was interesting, also.

I've noticed A LOT of that stuff and never thought about it, and when you pointed some of it out, I had to giggle. It was like my friends and I getting into a discussion over whether or not Duo from Gundam Wing was gay ro not. (we think he is, but we never did find a real answer).

I love this. I actually did read the entire thing and I have to agree completely. What really bugs me about manga right now is how Viz is changing the covers to make them the size of TokyoPop manga and make them cheaper, which gets rid of the cool Ranma covers I love.

i actually did read the whole thing, i enjoyed the diversity of your points and i thought it was very good. i really liked how you did everything and i am one of those anime people who would rather see the uncut versions of stuff instead of confused out of my mind or laughing at something that the translators made someone say instead of a cussword.

all in all, very enjoyable work that you wrote. ^^

isn't mistranslation and misinterpretation horrible? another thing that cracks me up is how "nagashima suparando (i really wish i could use katakana here)" a japanese amusement park, is always mistranslated among american roller coaster enthusiasts as "spaland"

COOL. this is well written and very informative. And unlike several other people who have posted on a similar topic, you did not fall into the trap of making the whole essay into a rant complaining that the american dubbers were screwing you over.

I think it was a well written essay on the topic. Broad in outline, but with sufficient examples to get your point across. Also good in the fact that you mentioned WHY changes were made for the American audience as opposed to just blasting those who made the changes.

Overall, an excellent job.
