| liveforthedream 2008-07-01 ch 4, | abuseI love Sue-Guides. This one is definitely one of my favs. |
| Blueberry Sparkle 2008-04-21 ch 4, | abuseI agree with your points wholeheartedly. And your perception of Alanna was very well received. Especially since she basically threw herself at anyone who came to fancy her and as I have said to my sister, "She slept with everyone!" I did however, wanted to bash your head in (no offense) when you mentioned Drizzt Do'Urden being a Mary Sue (or Marty Stew or whatever). You have to consider that even if he is good in battle and all that jazz, he was exiled from his own community because of his compassion and constantly shunned in the surface world because of the color of his skin. And he accepted this without so much as a complaint, as you yourself have said about whiny Mary Sues, because he knew what he was getting himself into. You've got to give Drizzt points for that, right? ^^ |
| YaoiAdikt 2007-12-24 ch 4, | abuseWow I really love this. I do agree with you, its amazing what people out there write. |
| Jay 2007-09-19 ch 1, anon. | abuseWell done! excellent essay, I feel you deserve a reward... Mary Sues really MAKES ME MAD! Some times the sheer so called "perfectness" of them makes me want to scream! You would think that the authors would have some common sense. But oh NO... |
| Gimstan 2007-08-12 ch 4, | abuseI love it! Its all so true! Please update soon! |
| Callie Rose 2007-06-08 ch 4, | abuseOMG i love you. I wrote a bunch of sues when I was in middle school, and I loved them. Then I grew up and all those stories make me cringe. Ick. I'm more about the unperfect ones. The characters that have issues and are normal. I try to make my characters have depth now. Please please please burn Tamora Pierce's Alanna. I hated her so much. She was whiny, she was stupid, and she didn't pick the right guy. I hated her when I finished reading those books. ~Callie |
| Morning Stars 2007-05-10 ch 2, | abuseWonderful. XD |
| Arya Darcy 2007-03-14 ch 4, | abuseThis was hilarious! Yet it proved a good point. I didn't like the few mild profanities though. This shall go on my favorites list. Good job! |
| thornsxinxyourxside 2007-02-23 ch 1, | abuseI love it , truly, of course I've had many a mary-sue in my day, but I'm older now. And actually I have turned down so many fantasy novels of late (oh and romance too) because everything is just SO CLICHE, I'm tired of it. I agree with the woman doesn't have to be powerful or be a fighter to be an awesome character, like Faraday, from the Wayfarer's Redemption, there was nothing too special about her, but she still KICKED **. But not literally, she didn't fight. |
| Slightly Obsessive 2006-12-31 ch 4, | abuseAnother amusing, well written and useful piece. |
| welcome.to.the.loony.bin. 2006-12-14 ch 4, | abuseif i ever write a story with an actual plot, i'll take care to avoid marysue-dom. infact, i think i will avoid females... |
| Vaze Stream 2006-12-10 ch 4, | abuseLove it. *claps and hands you a plate of virtual cookies* |
| Luv and Peace 2006-11-16 ch 4, | abuseHA! I completely agree. I've read stories that were completely irrelevant to anything else but the character's whining. There were only a handful of those which were actually good character stories. But when the first line of the story starts of with a whine or a description of the main character, I just stop reading and either look for another story or go back to work (whatever I should have been doing in the first place). Also with the servant thing, it's a good thing you pointed that out. Because alot of times when I read a story like that, I just can't help but think, okay so he's in love with her, but what's going to happen to the rest of the village/clan/country/etc? I agreed with all of that. Plus, Disney's Cinderalla, although she was treated like a servant, Cinderalla was actually 'someone' in the story. Like she wasn't actually a servant...(I don't remember if her father was a Duke, Lord...or was he a merchant? ...Though I read somewhere that even merchants at that time were somewhat more respected than servants...I'm not sure). Maybe you should write something about how a writer should research their character's background. Like, if they're making it up, (ie Fantasy) how they should go on about it and try to avoid Mary Sue type characters then, or if they're writing about the Stone Age, what to research and what not to? Because in most cases, that's what the story is lacking, a releastic story (albiet fictatious sotry). For example, I was going to write about China and how women in those times were trained to be perfect for their future husband. I gave up the idea mostly because I had no idea what I was writing and it wasn't genuine. SO that would be great. Anyway, hope you get your next part out soon! |
| Dorkie 2006-10-29 ch 4, | abuseThank you for writing this. Hopefully the people that need to read this will. And I think a few of my characters could use adjustment, as well. I read the Sword of Truth series, and after you pointed it out I did notice that Richard Rahl is definitely a Sue. Makes it different to read now. Anyway, thanks for writing this. |
| Liviania 2006-10-25 ch 4, | abuseThis is an excellent series of essays examining the problem of Sue-ism. (Although I must admit, I like Pierce's Alanna. She has elements of a Sue, but she still has character. She's smart, but she's stubborn and headstrong. It takes her a long time to accept the fact that it isn't so bad to be a woman, and perhaps she should be responsible for her life.) Livi |
