wow, very touching, and very sad, but whats even worse is that the irony and awfulness (that's not a word, is it?) is one hundred percent true. life often does that. there is no justice.

i like the way you narrated the story, though at some times it's kind of difficult to figure out what tense you're speaking in, so thnk about picking a tense, and sticking to it.
