I agree - bleak is definitely the word.

Doesn't necessarily have to be jail, could mean it as less literal and more symbolic.

Just very bleak and dead- feeling like there's no hope 'They know everything'.

The end jumps a bit at nervousness 'Whose idea' and finishes with a sighing wish.
