the subject verb agreement is a bit confusing in several in these sentences which make sthe train of thought hard to follow because I am asking "to what did that description belong?" for example, what was swallowed again by the enveloping darkness, the pavement or the the car? I am thinking that different punctuation may be helpful the pavement: rain-slicked .. . . .
