this is actually very good.

even though i'm not known for creating marysues, i could still identify with this. i've read many stories that fall under ur seven catergories and i never even realised! lol.

thnx for writing this.

This was quite a hilarious article. Though several of the examples made me cringe I really enjoyed this and will make sure that I go through and check all of my original characters.

I am a bit confused with my character. Her name is Layla Roberts. She has a major medical problem its called CIPA. Baisicly she can;t feel pain, can't sweat or feel hot and cold. This makes her life very dangerous and i am plannin g for her to die of over heating in the end. But where i can relly confused at is weather he romance life is making her a MAJOR mary sue despite her condition and her temper and anger problems and her previous drug addiction (during my story she doesn't have the addiction but it is mentioned she previously had one in high school) Her looks are average and she has sholder length wavy black hair and green eyes. She is 27 years old. But two canon charcters come to like her (one for romance, one for lustful reasons) Does she sound like a sue to you? Reply to me at my email address ) thank you for your time.

This seems to be aimed at fanfiction?

Nonetheless, both original fiction and fanfiction have one thing they must have in common: fun, original characters. And Mary Sues are never so.

The funny thing is I can usually spot Mary Sues in OTHER stories. Just not my own. This will be very helpful. In fact, my character was definitely an "angsty" Mary Sue, but I successfully fixed that. Now I have to be careful not to make the road to easy, huh?

Ha ha! Ah, the Mary Sue. I'm very familiar with the Mary-Sue litmus tests (actually, when I first took one, I thought the point was to HAVE a lot of the traits and get a HIGH score- my mistake ^^) but this is the first good article w/ examples and descriptions that I've read. My character Talia used to be a pity-beggar Sue, but I've since worked so that I think she's not one anymore; she still doesn't have guys hitting on her, but in the context of the story it would be pointless anyway...lol, went off on a tangent there...
Anyway, nice job and major kudos.

Actually, I think I'm guilty of this one, specifically the god-moding mary sue.
To counter this, I will up-play an element of her powers manifesting randomly and her not having much control over them.
Definitely marking this one as a favorite, to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

By the way: the term "mary sue" was one I had never heard before I found FictionPress. I think you mentioned that in here somewhere, but I can't find it now.

I thought this was helpful. However, I think that people should be able to write what they want without people getting...upset...HAHA. It is fanfiction not anything else. However, I agree that when I read stories with the continuous theme of this or that it can get annoying.
I wanted to ask though...what is the 'true effects' of rape? People respond in all types of ways: getting really emotional, showing no emotion at all, becoming more promiscious or expanding on their sexual promiscuity, not being able to have sexual relationships and the list goes on and on...so how is a rape victim supposed to act? Just a question. It is really the only thing I didn't understand or agree with but maybe you could help me understand it?

Thank you SO much for pointing all this stuff out. No one's perfect, everyone always has a personality or appearance issue. The one about Savannah was just ridiculous. I literally scowled when I read that. I can't believe someone would write that, though. It's an insult to all stories. People who write the crap with Mary Sues need to read this for a reality check, so please tell them to do so. Well done!

Thanks for this! It's really helpful to use when writting. :)

I honestly hate this idea of a "mary sue" Who on earth came up with idea anyway. And just to say Isabella, Scarlett, Marianna, Trinity, Destiny are all real names. My cousin is named Isabella. I know someone named Trinity and Destiny. And they are actually called that. Isabella annd Marianna doesn't sound very exotic to me. It's like saying never use Italian names. Well what if the name is part of their culture. It makes it sound like there is not such thing as foreigners to another land. Because there is no Americans in Japan or Italians with italians names in America. We must use the majority not the minority.
The concept of Mary Sue just ends up upsetting me. It's like you can't write what you want anymore. You have to be pressured with this "mary-sue" crap. I think people can still use unique characters in fanfics without being stupid.
If it is a fantasy where people do extrodinary things, is it impossibe to create a character to do the same? In a world with crazy hair color and eye color would natural black or blond be too unnatural. I think the problem may lie in that everyone does this with characters. It becomes cliche and readers want something different or in this case "normal" because everyone is making crazy characters that were saying no more super powers because we already have enough supermans and enough is enough. No more beautiful cause beauty is overated. Everything is so overdone that we are trying to pressure people to stop.
you seem to be talking about fanfiction, but I may be wrong. The first time I looked at what a Mary-Sue is, it was related to fanfiction.
But I keep seeing people related it to characters in published materials like Manga and Novels. An author was asked something about her character being Mary-sue like. I’m not sure if she got that Question, but I doubt she knew what a Mary-sue is. Unless you’re an avid Fanfiction and Forum reader I doubt think you’ll know. In discussions a manga character was called a Mary-sue. I didn’t understand. Because I really like her. She was interesting. I think she worked really hard and I saw her character develop into something strong. Even though it didn't focus on her training (she wasn't the main character). It was noted that she did work really hard. Besides it was better that being useless.
So I’m confused at that part. Is Mary-sue fanfic only or not?

Hey, this is very helpful so I don't create a Sue and I'm brand new to fictionpress so I was wondering what kinds of stories am I allowed to write? Can I create my own or do I have to choose a book or movie title? I really want to do my own
Tomoyuki Tanaka 2009-02-04 . chapter 1
okay, this is extremely useful. Thanks a lot, this will contribute a lot in reducing the creations of Mary Sues.
