Machines can be reprogrammed...I think that cruelty will have a whole new meaning when applied to your sentients - unless there is something more sinister going on, such as the transplantation of actual human consciousnesses.
Second point: the characters - the "we" seem childlike; are they being trained, allowing to mature, and why is this necessary? Or are they still test subjects, still prototypes having the kinks worked out in the lab?
Quite the thought-provoker; I like very much. I like the character of Angel very much and the ending is lovely.

This is a great story! It's is a little confusing at first, about the machines- at least I was confused, but the ending and storyline made up for it. Nice work.
