What a neat story! It feels like a fable, or a legend--an amazing effect. Definitely good for Christmastime. Something a mom would probably love, too ;-) If you wanted to change anything, I would avoid repeating "brown muslin" in the 5th and 4th-to-last paragraphs and describe her dress another way one of the times.
