Forgive me if I interpret your (really great) poem wrong. But I think I get what your saying and I agree with it.
Nobody should have to change the heritage and identity to become more like others. Assimilation is the tragic cause of lost culture and hardships for all minorities including blacks. However there is a difference between avoiding assimilating and purposefully setting yourself apart.
A lot of the black people I know, try way to hard to be "black" and in my opinion that is just as bad as trying to be white.
I like how you talk about assimilation and then the misinterpretation of what "black" is and then you tell what it really is to be proud of who you are. Very meaningful poem.
