abuseI think you're missing one major point in your reasoning: long standing biasm. If it was a mear matter of fear or change, America would most likely have a much easier chance of acceptance. For instance: slavery. The main reason it lasted as long as it did was not the fear or change, though you are right in believeing these two play a large role. There was a fear of whites being overpowered by blacks due to the black to white ratio in many parts of the south. By taking out slavery, the entire southern way of life, socially and economically, would be overturned. Fear and change are very powerful emotions, and, in this case, can lead to war. However, even longer lasting than the war was the racism geared towards african-americans. This had little to do with fear or change, because their fears had been realized and the change had came, but biasms that were passed down from generation to generation. Biasms are much harder to deal with than either fear or change, because they lie in the way people deal with one another. We've faced major social changes before. We've had the Moderns of the 20's, the industrialization, etc. We've also had baisms before. Sexism, racism... Biasms are simply more difficult to root out in a society than a social revolution is to root in. Homosexuality isn't some new social fab that's suddenly appeared. It isn't some new threat to the nuclear family. It's been in all society from day one, and we can quote the bible to get proof of this (because not many famous texts get much older than that). You're right, it is the fear and the change, but I think that you need to take a step back and look at the big picture to really get an answer to your question.

abuseThis is true to a point. You are completly right about sexual rolls and the like. I disagree with Chrisitanity being homophobic inherantly (see my essay 'Misunderstanding God') Very well said and very expressinve of how people really react.

abuseI agree with the arse-raping of Falwell. How very inappropriate of him, does he not realise what he's saying? It's absolutely dicusting what he's saying. I'm no Christian; nor feminist; but burn in Hell Falwell.

abuseGreat work!
I Hate the stereotypes that are perpetuated about gay people. Assuming that gay men are effeminate and lesbians masculine is obviously a very heterosexist perspective. Personally, I like same-sex relationships that do not require any gender role playing because that is how you can truly liberate yourself from the male-female power struggle.
Anyway, that Falwell guy is such a moron. But really we shouldn't be surprised. Sadly such people actually aren't as rare as we would presume.

abuseWell, I think the answer lies within the word itself. Phobia isn't just a fear of things. It's an *irrational* fear of things. Agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces. That's not *rational*. Homophobia is the fear of someone with sexual orientation different than your own. That is, also, not *rational*.
So, see, the answer was in the word this whole time. Some people just need to be a little more rational.

abuseoh...I've wondered why people are so anti-gay, because the reasoning they give just seems like an attempt at logical cover for an irrational fear, and this essay showed the possible reasons very well. Being not homophobic myself, I can't say how true this is, but it sounds good anyhow. Good job.

abuseIt's incredible how well your essay reflects all of the conclusions and beliefs that you and I appear to have made and share. This is one of the best essays I've ever seen, period.

abuseI'm Bi-sexual, too. It took me along time to open up because of such people as this Falwell creep...tho if i do say so myself, he WOULD Fall well if people started opening up thier minds..and HEARTS to the world around them.
EVERYONE on this planet is different...If we weren't we'd have a lot of twins...
God made us all different, thats what makes the world so varied. There are people all over the world who are differnt colors and races...
People have constantly beend discriminating against people whose skin is a different color, whose faith is different, whose culture is different, and now, whose sexualty is different...
Did not the lord shatter the tower of Babel with his own hand? He scattered the languages and the cultures when he did so, thus creating all the varied people we have today. How could he really condem people for that? He did so! I really don't think he does condem us for this, personally.
NBow, don't get me wrong, i am a strong christian. However...yes teh bible is suppoesed to be the word of God...but ever think of it in this light?
It was written by amutears...and by human beings who sin. is it not possible that things could be turned around? especially since many of these things were written down long after the event took place. Also, things could have been twisted around. People have NEVER liked things they couldn't understand and are different. People hate change, too. It all falls into place.
Well, I think, for the timebeingg i have exhasted my point. however, I comend anyone who puts this type of thing out. And i agree with you 100%

ch 1,
abuseWell said. Very well said. Ultimately, the religious arguements about sexuality come down to personal taste or distate for homosexuality. I have a personal distaste for, say, red meat, but does that make people who like red meat and consume it evil and sinful and doomed to burn in Hell? Certainly not. It's just a difference in what we 'like' and 'dislike'. There is nothing wrong about homosexuality becasue it does not involve hurting or abusing another person's life or trust.
This is very well thought out and reasoned, a refreshing alternative to the unsupported rants that pollute this site.
Reason will win the day, not religious fanaticism; the arguments used against homosexuality are similar to the arguments used against the abolition of slavery and apartheid, as well as interracial marriage and women's suffrage ("It's unnatural! it goes against (my) God's will!" EEw...it's disgusting!).
Rock on!

abuseWell, thought I'd voice something here since you have opened up the floor a bit.
Homophobia is (literally) fear of gay people. Also referred to as "Anti-Gay". The big deal about it? Nobody knows for sure. It's all based upon beliefs, you could say.
But that's just a definition of what Homophobia is. There's also a debate about whether or not people are "born" gay or "decide" to be gay. The question has been long asked since the early 90's when we all really started to notice gay-teens.
What is homophobia really? To me its not that people "fear" homosexuality its that they can't agree with it.
When they can't agree with it they can't agree to disagree either.
Religions can be hypocritical at times, if you ask me. People want to blame gays, lesbians, muslims and such for the reason our nation is going into such sin and they won't admit that they themselves have sinned. Divorce is a sin but they don't look at it as a big one. They want to blame that gays are having "premarital" sex when in this common era the average age the first person will have sex now is 15, yet they don't want to look at that one. They want to look to the gays instead.
Anyway, that was just a bit of food for thought. I'd go on but I think I've taken up much of your time *end random thought*

abuseagain, me likes. I like the angle you take in answering your questions. You make the case of your opponent. I am reminded of the man in Plato's Republic who took up the opposition's argument in order to be proved wrong. In ways, of course.

abuseAs far as I can see (of course looking through biased, nonhomophobic eyes), there are no flaws in this argument.
The Reverend should take a closer look on the history of the Bible and the Koran...

ch 1,
abuseWell written, without too much obvious bias, which was nice. it was all presented quite nicely.
I can't believe that Reverend Jerry Falwell dude said those things. I had no idea that people could be so, well, freaking stupid. I mean, look at countries with legalised same sex marriages like Canada or the Netherlands or many other European countries. Most of these countries have been rated in the top ten by the UN for the quality of life they can offer their citizens. Anyway, since these countries are living in such awful sin, why hasn't God destroyed them?
Yeah, just thought I'd mention that.
Well done.
