Perhaps you should draw out the suspense before the fiddle is smashed just a little longer.

Very nice! I love your descriptions of the forest and what's happening to the kids! As far as short stories go, it was good, but perhaps you could expand a bit more on how the kids felt after the spell was broken...just a thought. GREAT JOB!
