You have interesting criticisms. However, arguments about: Marriage, drugs, and smoking all have their good and their bad sides. Good arguments can lead to good decisions. Whether all people have the right to marriage effects a large number of people who today are being restricted that right. Prisons are filled with drug dealers and users; a change in perspective regarding those substances could drastically change what people consider as "Freedom." And for cigarretes--should we outlaw certain items to protect people from themselves? Those three arguments, at least, have only been around for thirty years or less, as well.
All these arguments can get tedious, however, especially when people start flinging muck at each other. So there is a bad side to the argument. However, so long as you understand the underlying significance and can see through the distortion of facts, such arguments can be enlightening.
