Well - I know this is wrong. But, aside from the physical descriptions, which certainly don't fit, it sounded to me like someone talking about their dæmon...
If you've never heard of dæmons - the concept is described in the series His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman. Dæmons are, more or less, a personification of a person's soul - so clearly, someone's dæmon would be their closest friend, their staunchest protector, their most trusted adviser. But the physical description you gave certainly doesn't fit - dæmons almost always take the form of a real or fantastical animal.
Ah well - it was just thing the first thing that came to mind.
