I like how this is going. Just one thing- in the first paragraph, you tell us that Melanie's parents treated her rotten. It's better to show us with an example of how nasty they were (as I haven't yet read the rest you may well have done this later on in the story, in which case I apologise. But just some advice in case you haven't).
