They give the impression of having been, not crafted or constructed, but called into existence instantaneously, as God created the heavens and the earth. They fit together so perfectly they seem to breathe. Even the curious quirks of diction and construction are well-justified — or rather, are beyond needing justification, because they are so perfectly united to meter and meaning that they are revealed as inevitable and necessary.

I've left this omnibus review with "The Lake" because, for purely personal and subjective reasons, it is the one that resonates most with me. They say that the worst review is vague praise; I hope I have at least made my praise definite — and if that does not count as constructive, I have nothing constructive to say. |
