I don't know if you have read Mercedes Lackey, a fantasy novelist, but she wrote a story called Brightly Burning, the theme of which is very similar to your poem. I'd check it out. Your poem is great work. I'm not quite sure I know what the ending means, but maybe it is supposed to leave the reader guessing? Well-done, either way.
